Kids and their imagination!

As some of you may know, Jayne is a constant thumb sucker.  If she is happy, sad, tired, bored, thinking, whatever....she is sucking her thumb.  So yesterday while having a quiet moment on the couch....we had a conversation that went like this:

Me: "Jayne? When are you going to stop sucking your thumb?"
Jayne: (heavy, long sigh) "Mom can I tell you the truth?"
Me:  "Of course you can tell me the truth.  I hope  you will always tell me the truth."
Jayne:  (Looking straight into my eyes) "Mom.... (long pause)...... I am a wizard."  "And wizards HAVE to have braces."
Me: (trying to keep a straight face and keep the same serious mood that is in the air) "Okay. But I think even wizards stop sucking their thumbs."  (I really can't remember what I said after her comment....I was just thinking....I have got to write this one down.... don't laugh.  Don't laugh.)

So if any of you know how wizards stop sucking their thumbs.....I am all ears.  She will be 5 on Sunday.  The only thing that gives me hope is that I have never seen a 16 year old sucking her thumb.

thats hilarious! Natalie sucked her finger till just recently (she 8 you know) and really she only stopped because I took her to the orthodontist and they put this appliance thing in her mouth that made it hurt to suck them. At age 8 I think it was totally nescisary, don't you? looking back, 5's not so bad...

So funny, I do have a cousin who is 29 who still sucks her thumb at night.

Troy sucked his finger for a while. We totally bribed him, Bill asked him what he wanted he said a bike. So we bought him a bike and he never sucked his finger again. I am sure that that goes against some parenting rule.

Bribes are always good...as my pediatrician always tells me, :you are trading something small for something much much bigger.

Unfortunately my mom sucked her thumb behind her books in high school!!!

That is HILARIOUS!! Atleast she's honest. So what, you'll have to get her braces. Chances are, she'll need them for some reason or another anyway.

Oh, not to scare you or anything, but I finally stopped sucking my thumb when I was 12, after I discovered that I had beaver teeth, and they really were related to my thumb. It was hard to stop, but I made it (a tleast I haven't heard Josh complaining that I suck my thumb in my sleep). My sister however, would still suck well in her 20's when she was particularly sad/stressed out. :)

Good luck. You might ask Harry Potter what he did to get rid of it!

Love, Dagmar
